Dallas Burlesque Festival 2012 & Lots of Other Info & Pics!
I just returned from my trip down home to Dallas, Texas to perform in the 4th Annual Dallas Burlesque Festival produced by The Ruby Revue, one of the biggest burlesque troupes in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area. One of the producers, Ginger Valentine, was just recently crowned "Queen of Burlesque" at the New Orleans Burlesque Festival. You may wonder, what's the big deal with the festivals? Well, you are not alone. You are asking the same question as my Mom! She was surprised when I told her that we don't get paid to perform in the festivals, if we are lucky, we get an honorarium which can vary from $25-300 depending on your level of "fame". The headliners (for instance, in the Dallas festival, they were Michelle L'amour (Chicago), The Schlepp Sisters (NYC), and Bazuka Joe (Chicago)) will usually have their airfare and accommodations covered by the show producers. The rest are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation. I could see my mom's reaction. Naturally her next question was, "What do you get out of it? You spend so much money! How come you girls don't have personal sponsors? Someone should start a 'scholarship' or something for you all to apply for to cover your costs for costuming and flying around."
All good questions which I tried to answer. I explained firstly, for me, I like to travel and go to cities I've never been to or cities where I have friends (and obviously family) in so that factor greater determines my application decision. Secondly, festivals are worth doing because you get to meet other performers and expand your network. As a producer I am always looking for established, out-of-town performers to shake things up here a bit. It's immeasurably valuable for me to meet some of the ladies in person and watch them perform in person. And thirdly, I think every performer secretly wants to win a title of some kind if they are performing in a pageant-based festival. These titles don't really mean much in the real world sense. They are only relevant in the burlesque community. Most civilians don't know what the titles are or care, but performers are still introduced with a string of titles they've won such as "Miss Coney Island", "Best Debut at the Burlesque Hall of Fame", "The Legends Award" so on and so forth. The creativity behind the titles are amusing. The biggest honor, however, is to perform AND be titled in the annual Burlesque Hall of Fame weekend in Las Vegas. This festival is THE Oscars for burlesquers. It's also like a weekend summer camp for performers and burlesque aficionados alike. I have never been but perhaps this year I will.
The Dallas festival took place at the House of Blues, and the place was HUGE. I have seen the girls of Ruby Revue perform at the anniversary show last year and I thought they were all very talented, detail oriented, and super polished. So it was really awesome to meet at least three of them in person: Ginger Valentine, Missy Lisa, and Black Mariah (who I met in an elevator, drunk, when I was in New Orleans). The girls also had Tami True on the set list. If you don't know who she is, she's one of the legends from the olden days before "burlesque" is feminist and it was just straight up stripping. Tami True was one of the headline dancers at the striptease club The Carousel Club owned by the infamous Jack Ruby! She is now 70-something but still spitfire. We were both in the second set on Saturday night and we shared a small gripe backstage about how it was already midnight and we still haven't performed yet. If you look up anything related to Jack Ruby, she will show up. I even saw a documentary about Jack Ruby where her name was lit up in the marquee outside the Carousel.
On another smaller stage the "All Stars Weekend" boy band was playing. I heard that they are on the Disney Channel but there was a HUGE line of pre-teen and teenage girls lined up outside the venue at 430pm waiting for them! I don't know who they are but they seem popular with the teen girls. They were in another dressing room but seemed very curious about all the burlesque performers changing backstage. Hahaha. This was the biggest stage I've performed on besides the Colorado Burlesque Festival which is really good too. I highly recommend applying for both Dallas and Colorado's festivals! My mom, aunt, my brother and my man were in attendance on my night. And my old childhood friend came with a friend of hers. And I am happy to report that thanks to those of you (Dixie Rising in particular) who commented on my Facebook wall inquiring about the right color of stage lighting for Asian complexion, I asked for a pink light and it looked simply MAAAARVELOUS!
(I've now started to watermark all my pictures front and center because people keep stealing my photos and not crediting who I am or at least who the photographer is. Sorry for the visual disturbance..)
I love going home to Texas. I don't take my computer so I am away from technology (except my iPhone), I don't have to think about what to feed myself every day (my Mom is a killer cook), and I sleep in every day and go shopping with my Mom and aunt. The biggest decision I have to make while at home is whether or not I should indulge in fast food dri-thru. It's so nice to give my brain a rest for a few days. We closed out the festival weekend at the Sunday Awards & Show at Dish Restaurant in a nice neighborhood that looked to me like the "Chelsea of Dallas". Everyone in my family came even my dad! I didn't perform so it was okay for him to be there. My sixteen year old cousin had to stay home with Chewie but he didn't mind. I don't think he knows what "burlesque" is yet. He just immigrated to the States from Taiwan less than a year old and teenagers in Taiwan are much less precocious than American teens. The food was delicious and so were the drinks! The show was really fun and had more sing/strip acts than the Saturday night show. I got to meet more girls from Dallas and elsewhere. My brother wanted pictures with everyone! My dad said afterwards that he wasn't very shocked but then again he was drinking whiskey straight up.
Back in NYC, I am happy to announce the return of "Drunken Dragon Nights" at Macao Trading Company on Monday, February 20! Two hours of open bar from 9-11pm with burlesque by myself, Gal Friday, Nikki Le Villain, and new to DDN, Tansy at 10pm! Kittening by Minx Arcana. It is a free event but you must RSVP to get past by our doorman Mauricio at info@macaonyc.com
Secondly, tonight, February 9, 2012 marks the 2nd year anniversary of my THURSDAY night at Nurse Bettie! Incredible, eh? I've never been committed to anything this long!
Thirdly (is there such a term?), "Les Fleurs de Shanghai" returns to Duane Park on Wednesday, February 29, 2012! Just so happens that this month's show lands on a leap year, how lucky for us! Last month's show sold out completely, even the bar was packed so don't wait til last minute and take your chances. Dinner & Show RSVP are required by calling Duane Park at 212.732.5555. I am extra excited this month to introduce our fans to an extraordinary musician from Julliard, Andy Lin, who will be playing the traditional Chinese instrument "er hu" which is absolutely and unbelievably haunting. It will bring tears to your eyes.
Lastly, you can see me this Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 9 PM on the quirky TV series "Oddities" on Science Channel! If you are unfamiliar with the show, I highly recommend it! It's about an old antique shop in the East Village of NYC and all the quirky characters who come in looking for particular items. They are not your grandmother's kind of antique shop. Tune in to my episode called "Seeing Scars"! (Read my earlier post about being filmed for the episode here)

Birthday Week Recap (Lotta Pictures!)
My birthday week began on Monday night with an extremely triumphant return to TriBeCa's favorite Asian-Portuguese fusion restaurant's monthly word-of-mouth show "Drunken Dragon Nights"! The last time I was there for DDN as I call it was in February. But show time moves at an accelerated speed than "profane" time (who gets the reference? I will give you a free Beatles Burlesque tshirt!) so it felt like it's been six months away.
The night began with a cocktail class on rye whiskey led by Dushan Zaric. From what I could see, there were plenty of cocktails to sample and lots of nibbles passed around on plates. The class portion is 2 hours from 7-9pm and admission is $55 a person, I believe. Many people ask me when DDN is and the annoying answer is, "It depends." This show and party is word-of-mouth. There are 2 foolproof ways to get in the know:
Thursday night at Nurse Bettie was spectacular! It was an extra long show with extra performers than usual. There were balloons and cupcakes and I saw a lot of familiar faces like Frances, Caprice, Bill (from LA), Mark without Lauren, it was old skool style!
Friday night capped off with the show at Hotel Chantelle. Because there were a couple of big reservations arriving at 10pm, the show started early meaning on time at 9pm to a quiet, smaller crowd. Though small, they were enthusiastic and generous with their appreciation.
Thursday night at Nurse Bettie, Tansy Tan Dora (pictured left) did a special birthday act for me. Her entire dress was made out of birthday wrapping paper!! She even made pleats out of her dress and a little bra top! I was so moved by the thought and creativity that went into this. So amazing!
After Nurse Bettie, I went to see the bitches at Meaner, Harder, Leather at Vig27 and to hear Brassy sing. I have to say, when I watch these drag queens do their thang, I learn more about being feminine from watching them! The walking, the posing, and the secret weapon of knowing WHEN to just stand still and let the audience absorb you. Many new performers feel like they have to always be doing something when on stage, I was there once too. But sometimes you have to slow down, relish that 3-4minutes, and allow your audience to just look at you.

Knobby Knees
The Drunken Dragon Nights show on Monday night was freakin AWESOME!! I have assembled my ultimate dream team at this show!!! Gal Friday, Bird of Paradise, and Kita St Cyr. We each did 2 numbers, and everyone had an Asian song from the 70's they danced to. Macao moved up the happy hour from 9 and extended it an extra hour til 11. I started the show at 11pm, on time, as usual. I can't help being prompt-it's in my Chinese genes to be on time. LOL. There was no microphone, or at least, they couldn't figure out how to turn it on so I sat on the bar and UBER-LORDED over everyone with my voice. The crowd is spectacular!! Everyone paid attention when the performances were going on, NO ONE talked. People were sitting on the floor captivating by the red light and by us. It felt like naughty story time for me sitting up high and talking to everyone. Incredible!! I didn't have to control them at all - they were just such an amazing audience! The space is small and there's no stage but we clear off a circular space in front of the bar to dance in. It feels intimate and a little bit illegitimate - as Gal said, it has the vibe of going out randomly with your friends and stumbling onto a strip show and then telling your friends about the find.
Everyone was amazing, amazing, amazing. This was the first time I worked with Kita and she is really good. She is "the cutie with the bootie" and she really owns those curves of hers. Cheeky Lane, a new kitten, was clearly the least shy of all kittens I've ever worked with. She was spectacular in the way she worked that champagne bucket for tips. Didn't hurt that she wore a black teddie with fringe on her butt. The hospitality and care Macao takes to make sure the performers are happy makes it so rewarding to work with them. It makes everyone happy when we feel like they appreciate what we are doing, and vice versa. I was really excited about this second month's show because they've been wanting me to do my "Dusk Til Dawn" act - so I finally did that act and had the alcohol sponsor's drink in a bottle that I poured into audience members' mouths. It was bourbon by Heaven Hill and it was 90% proof. Which I did NOT know. I usually pour gold glitter from a Patron botle on my body at the end of this act, but since it was bourbon night, I poured the bourbon on myself. Little did I know how much it would sting my ass crack!! Holy moly. At least I can say my butt crack was clean and thoroughly disinfected!
For the closing number I developed a new act just for Drunken Dragon Nights that's similar to the photo I have for the event with me crawling on the bar. The visual pun is that I AM the drunken dragon splayed out on the bar. Anyway - I LOVE this act. I wish I can do this everywhere. The song is "Help Me with My Blood Count" by The Giraffes that Matt Egan (our drummer for Beatles Burlesque) turned me onto. I wish I had video or pictures of this act but I don't... alas. Does anyone have any who were at the event? When I rehearsed this act, my knees got banged up pretty bad. All that crawling and slithering around on the bar did not mix with my knobby knees. Even my surgeon who removed the cyst on my back (healing great! scar is doing fine) - asked, "How did you get a boyfriend with knobby knees?" I replied, "I guess he doesn't look down there..."
This Saturday is "Spreading the Curtains" at Coco De Mer - with Gal Friday (I'll see her 3 times this week!), Dame Cuchifrita, and Pandora. Dame has worked out this group act involving Pan the sex goat god but as a woman. I can't wait to go to rehearsal and see what the deal is! As usual like last time, 42Below is sponsoring my event with an open bar all night featuring their famous 42Below Lemonade. It's $25 a person and seating is limited to 35 people! Dont forget to RSVP if you are thinking of coming. It sold out last month.
In day time news, I started at a new agency this week. The other contract wrapped up. This new place is more suitable for my life right now. The work, although not as creative or stimulating, is much easier and the creative team is staffed properly so no one is busting a 12hour day here. Most of the creatives here are people I've worked with before when I was at MRM like 6 years ago. One of the Creative Directors was someone I dated very briefly a long time ago and it was kinda funny to see him again after all these years. He's now married and is expecting his first bebee! I like this new place cause the commute is easy, I am next to Reminiscence, Outback Steakhouse, and Home Depot! And they have Dance, Dance, Revolution set up in the game room along with Wii, PS3, and XBox.

Two Worlds Become One
Phew, I am finally coming up for air! I can't believe it wasn't that long ago when I was lounging around the pool in Mexico with nothing to do but finish reading that annoying book "A Reliable Woman" - and now, two new monthly shows done and successfully underway, and I'm in my second week settling in at the new freelance gig.
First up, the Coco de Mer show. Exquisite. So special to me. That's the only way I can describe it. The intimate salon setting of 35 people, the delicious open bar by 42 Below served by the handsome, lady-fav Masa, the acts by Madame Rosebud (Story of O, Venus in Fur) and Amber Ray doing my two favorites of her acts which also happened to be two of her heaviest acts, as she was quick to inform me upon arrival with luggage in tow. :) Romina and Abby made the night go very smoothly and with Matt and Michael doing AV/sound, I couldn't have asked for a better crew. Michael gets special kudos for assisting me in, er, getting into gear, let's just call it that, for my new equestrian act. There was some gear malfunction that Rosebud warned me about but all in all it was very amusing to everyone who knows about it. I don't want to give it away cause I will be doing this act frequently - it is my new favorite. The next Coco de Mer show is July 24th. I will be integrating more and more Coco de Mer products into the acts. My vision for this show and partnership is to give the outside world a glimpse of the secret language of fetish by utilizing objects to tell a story through the use of burlesque theater. I've got my eyes set on this beauty:

Second, last night, was Drunken Dragon Nights at Macao Trading Company. This was a tremendously energetic and enthusiastic crowd!! So much fun and all without a stage! Having the open bar for two hours before the show did not hurt getting people all roused up. Or, rather, I should say, AROUSED up. This was a horny crowd!!! I guess that's better than being an ornery crowd. Mwah ha ha. It must be all the erotic Asian posters on the hallway and in the bathroom, the jade dildos in the display case, and the dim red lighting. When I was strutting around pre-show, many people asked when the show was starting so I knew that a lot of people there stayed late to see the show. I did a two-in-one act where I stripped out of my new MC-ing dress (see here) to a song from the classic striptease CD that every burlesquer has - then it segways into my usual fan dance number, the 1930s Japanese cover of "St. Louis Blues". This was actually the first time I've danced to a song from the classic striptease CD and I can see why it is so popular! Such a big sound for strutting and bumping, such attitude. Even if I was full of a bag of cheese puffs (my favorite guilty time snack!) and a Chipotle burrito, I would still feel sexy rehearsing to this CD.

I spoke to several people afterwards who all said they loved the show. I knew about ten people in the crowd, but the rest, I didn't know. It was on the sausage festival heavy side. But it was a great room to be in. All the boys at Macao (Igor, Brian, Karato, Rizo etc) are so gallant and knightly. They definitely make a girl feel safe performing there and we were lushed on with the specialty Don Julio Tequila cocktails all night. Thanks Don Julio! I was especially pleased when a group of Chinese girls thronged me after the show and complimented me on how much they loved the fan dance. They took photos with me and I was so happy to see that not all Chinese females resort to high turtlenecks and making babies and rice at home. Holla sistas! I hope they come back again and eventually join me on the dark side. WA HA HA. One of the audience members, male, asked me where I got my boobs being Asian and all. My reply? "Your fucking American diet, that's where."
Day time work wise, I found myself saying, "I'm looking forward to going to work on Monday!" which I have not heard myself say in a good few years! This new place is so awesome. I am definitely creatively stimulated. A part of my job consists of designing web sites and fancy Facebook applications, and another part is coming up with event planning. Hello!? Is that not like my night time job? The best part? Everyone knows about my burlesque career and loves it. Finally, two worlds become one. Ah...
I have a couple nights off then it's Nurse Bettie Wednesday and Thursday night, and on Saturday, I'm at BadAss! Bettie Page Tribute at Arlene's Grocery at midnight. I am so excited about this show because so many great performers are in it and it's hosted by World Famous BOB!
On Wednesday, June 30, I will also be doing something with Tansy at her theater play at The Tank called "Eager to Loose: a Panto Burlesque" - I don't know what that means but she's a pal and I'm happy to do an act or two at her play!
