A Chinese-Texan From NYC Goes to Canada

January 2013 is half way over and I am still missing my 10 days in Canada during New Year's Eve. I vowed to myself not to perform during NYE last year (need to carve out some my time), but my New Year's Eve day was still filled with drama & heart attack. One of the venues (which I will never work for or do any favors for anymore) cancelled the three performers they had begged me to book for them. They cancelled at 3 PM the day of! The worst thing was that they didn't even bother to tell the performers, and the girls only heard because one of them (god bless her) took the initiative to call ahead. I was very angry with the way this particular venue and "event director" handled the situation. He and I got on the phone (I racked up $200 in international calls), and despite his sad explanations (the venue decided to be closed completely, someone is "out to get him", etc) and his promise to get the performers some compensation, none of the girls got a follow up from him. I wasn't getting paid to refer the girls because I did it as a favor for him. I am not working with them in the future again. Luckily the other bookings I coordinated went without a hitch. I can't help but feel burned by this shoddy, shady transaction! But it is what it is, so wig on, chin up, and forward we go (paraphrasing a famous World Famous Bob saying).

For this Canadian trip, we went by car! I didn't drive, that's what boys are for. Ha! We drove through Buffalo, Syracuse, and even my Alma Mater Cornell University in Ithaca. I haven't been back upstate since I graduated years and years ago, and I was truly surprised at how nostalgic I became as our car slushed through the snowy landscape...now familiar again. I was reminded of many snowy dark nights spent in the deepest and most hidden corner of a library, reading and writing essays. And well lets just keep it real, also many a nights smoking a big ass Tompkins County spliff! I was tempted to take that Ithaca exit off the highway but we were trying to make good time to Toronto plus I wanted to go to Duty Free by the border so until next time, high above Cayuga Lake!

Finally I got to wear these Sorel boots I bought two years ago! Boy was I glad I had these with me this trip. They are the UGGs of Canada! Almost every girl had a pair on in downtown Toronto.
Passing through Syracuse, NY

The drive up...
The drive up took us 9 hours because of the snow storm. We got stuck behind some snow plows too and the road was really icy. Several cars were in the ditches, but luckily, Michael being from Canada, is well-versed in the art of driving in icy, snowy conditions. We almost got in an accident because the car in front of us braked suddenly causing us to swerve to the other lane which then caused Chewie to blop down onto the floor. I put her in her travel case, seat belted of course, after that. She wasn't injured since we were going so slow.  Crossing the US/Canada border was a breeze much to my relief. Many because I am an immigrant, I just have this fear of immigration of all kinds. I was mostly nervous about bringing a dog in so I had all her paper work for rabies and health certificate ready. But the border guy didn't even ask at all. We were in and out under 5 minutes.

Chewie sunbathing in the sun room. Every house in Canada seems to have a sun room! That's definitely not something I've ever seen growing up in Texas. Sun room? It's so damn hot in Texas who would be crazy enough to have a SUN room?? More like a winter room!
We arrived safely in Kitchener early evening after picking up a couple giant bottles of vodka at duty free, score! I also scored an unusual Swarovski black crystal pendant with a dragon wrapped around it.

Kitchener, Ontario is about an hour outside of Toronto, and it is famous for being the #2 biggest Oktoberfest Festival outside of Munich. As one of my Orthodox Jewish friend said jokingly, it is when "Canadians become Nazis". Okay you gotta take that with a grain of salt. I do love German food, and Kitchener had plenty of traditional grub to offer. The first night we went to an old institution called LuLu's. There was an older musician playing covers of popular songs while we dined. I had the veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce - so good! LuLu's may be old, not much to look at ducked away in a sad shopping center, but they sure ain't cheap!!

Me on New Year's Eve. Cozy home party exactly what I wanted.

I also performed in Red Herring's monthly show "Reveal Me Burlesque" at the Rivoli in Toronto on January 2. The stage is great and so is the backroom. I bet all New York performers lust after the venues outside of New York. Rivoli was no exception. Cute cabaret style round tables and seats. Nice stage lighting and a proper green room connected to the stage. Private bathrooms just for performers. Only odd thing was the drink tickets were only good for beer! Strange as I don't know ANY performers who drink beer. Well, I was in Canada, after all! Haha.

After the show which was PACKED for January, I went to eat at Queen Mother a thai-indonesian fusion restaurant with Michael and his friends. Queen Mother is where Sandra Oh used to waitress before she became famous! The food was amazing!!!!! And it was snowing in soft fluffy puffs outside. I love snow!

Snowy Queen Street late night view
Outside the Super8 Motel. It is FINE! for $120 a night smack in the middle of everything, I would stay there again. Plus, it is inside the Chinatown Mall where you can buy a box of 24 pairs of eyelashes for $20. Don't listen to the reviews on Google.

I spent the night at the nearby Super8 Hotel which just happened to be in Toronto's Chinatown! This made me so happy. This Chinatown is smaller than New York's and more manageable. It is cleaner and not as crazy with so many people doing the "Chinatown shuffle". What is that, you ask? It is the popular form of walking by shuffling slowly and being completely unaware of people around you. It drives me crazy! Come on, Chinese people. Stop spitting and shuffling! UGH!!!

The next day we went back to Kitchener and on the way back I wanted to experience this chain restaurant called "Moose Winoski". I was hoping to see some gamey meats there but I stayed on my diet and ordered a grill salmon. Gotta be good one meal and bad another meal, is how I do it!

I'm milking the moose!
I really enjoyed all the things I saw and places I went to in Kitchener. In many ways, it is similar to some of the older cities in Texas near where I grew up. I even went to a Swiss Chalet for some rotisserie chicken. It reminded me of Luby's Cafeteria. It had the same vibe. I also noticed that Kitchener had a lot of elderly people. That might just be because we don't see elderly folks in NYC.
I particularly loved going to Value Village and Talize, second hand thrift stores.

Amazing vintage coat I found at Value Village in Kitchener. I can understand why ancient men wore fur now. This shit keeps the cold OUT! I don't think I've ever experienced this kind of cold before.
I toured Castle Kilbride in Baden, Ontario (near Kitchener). It is a Victorian house from the Livingston Family. The owner was known as the "Flax and Oil King" of Canada. Had amazing original Victorian furniture such as this dresser along with impressive trompe l'oeil murals on the ceilings and walls.
Castle Kilbride is famous for the trompe l'oeil murals

More white people artifacts. Haha!
The last two days of our trip we went back to Toronto and stayed at The Gladstone Hotel. I booked Room 402 called "Echame Flores". I wanted to get some photos in this beautiful Victorian-style room of rich red tones. I am committed to growing my "Hotel Series" in 2013 no matter where I stay at, high and low end! Chewie got to stay with me too but I had to organize that in advance with the hotel which has a "No Pet Policy". But because Chewie is now my "Emotional Support Animal", she was allowed.
We all know who this is
We spent the first day being flâneurs, experiencing the downtown Toronto neighborhoods with no plans or schedule doing whatever struck our fancy.

Around 5pm I was ready to start happy hour. We found ourselves in a good looking French bistro called La Palette. French bistros are my favorite type of restaurants. I love the decor, the ambiance, and a plate of steak frites (or tuna tartare) accompanied by a glass of Cote du Rhone provides instant happiness. I took a look at the menu and I gasped!

HORSE TENDERLOIN?! HORSE TARTARE!?

Holy crap, I was shocked! I've always thought of myself as an adventurous eater and I'm usually the one of the "other side" of culinary discussions defending various cultural meat choices with an anthropological slant. But I found myself... outside my comfort zone. Maybe cause I loved horses growing up and went riding often in Texas. Cows are sacred in India. Dogs are pets in Western cultures but a delicacy in some Asian cultures. Horses are consumable in some parts of France but in Britain, a horse is a horse.  I just heard on NPR this week about the supermarket Tesco finding horse meat in some of their burger meats. (Read NPR's report) British people are horrified! But according to this report, "hippophagy" (eating horses) is a common practice in parts of France, Belgium, and Italy. Nomadic Asiatic groups practice hippophagy as well. Nevertheless, I said neigh. It'd be like eating an unicorn's cousin! So I had mussels.

The next stop was a Czech bar. I had sweet potato perogies and my go-to drink Vodka Soda while waiting for a friend to meet up. I was told to go to Sweaty Bettie's as well which is a local favorite. I thought of it as Nurse Bettie's Canadian cousin. It was dark in there but I could see framed photos of tattooed sailors on the wall. Maybe it wasn't that dark in there but I was getting purdy drunky poo.

Michael at Sweaty Bettie's
George and Chewie at our 5th stop (or was it 6th...?). I don't remember the name of the bar.
Another stop - Delux on Ossington for steak frites. So good! Ossington was filled with cool new restaurants.

Next stop - Salt for boar tacos and other tapas. This "Michael Collins" was a strange brew concocted with CHICKEN STOCK! I did not try it.

More stops - I don't remember where this was
Needless to say, I burnt myself out the first weekend night in Toronto like an amateur! The next morning I was SO hung over but managed to crawl downstairs to eat at the Gladstone brunch. But really all I wanted is noodle soup, my hangover cure. But there were no noodle soup shops in sight at 11am. The only two Vietnamese pho restaurants were not even open. Sad morning. And we still had to do the photo shoot in the room before our afternoon plans. Miraculously enough, photo shoot was accomplished successfully (see the Hotel Series), afternoon appointments completely on time, and I even managed to get a bowl of Chicken Curry with Rice in before an afternoon nap!

Chewie on the mantle. I've thought about taxidermying her when the time comes... but everyone discouraged me.

This is my current iPhone wallpaper

Finally on our drive back to NYC which was on perfect Monday morning with no snow or traffic, we stopped by Niagara Falls on the Canada side which I've never seen before! It must be off-season but nothing was open. Not even the Starbucks at 11am! The town felt a bit like the old Vegas strip dotted with tawdry motels with Jacuzzis and honeymoon suites. We stopped by to get gas at an empty convenience store, and an old man was telling the teenage cashier that his wife of 30 years had passed away three months ago. She said, I'm sorry. And he said he was lonely without her.

Niagara Falls, beautiful and powerful but a little sad too

News of all types!

So my parents have come and gone, and it was a very successful trip! They loved Beatles Burlesque on Monday night and they also really enjoyed the scenery along the Delaware River. We found a few waterfalls near Milford, PA and one of them was self-titled "The Niagara of Pennsylvania" - Bushkill Falls. I thought that was really funny considering that my pee-ing is bigger than some of the "waterfalls" in the park. Haha. We cooked dinner in the cabin at night and looked at the local stores during the day. I don't need to see another candle shop again in my life, much like my experience in Rome and Florence. I don't need to go inside another church in my life again either!
Me, Chewie and my Dad!
Our cabin by the Delaware River. Cozy but a little dirty and I did see a mouse.

They came to the Beatles Burlesque show and I have to admit, this past month's show was my personal favorite. There was a lot of variety in terms of guest musicians and a guest vocalist. Michael Cunio from Reckless Place (and Jersey Boys Chicago) has such great stage presence and he writhed on stage during Helter Skelter like fucking Axel Rose in his leather pants. He is also the lead singer for Reckless Place, the band Michael is now in, and they are playing this Thursday night at Ace of Clubs on Great Jones Street! 9 PM with a bunch of other rock bands!

Michael Cunio who wears eyeliner really well!
OMG the hotness factor with these three was INSANE!!!
I am really excited to see this show and not just because before the show, I'm going to see the Unsung Heroes of Burlesque photography opening with Dame Cuchifrita AND that upstairs from the Ace of Clubs is one of my favorite Cajun restaurants in all of NYC, Acme! I need an Oyster Po' Boy and a night to do other things and support Michael's show with Reckless so I won't be a Nurse Bettie this Thursday night. The following week is Thanksgiving so there are no shows on Wednesday and Thursday. The next time I'll be at Nurse Bettie is December 2 with Minnie Tonka, Fem Appeal, Gal Friday, Tansy, and Brassy.

I didn't take any clothes off! But I was a little potty-mouthed.
This past Thursday at NB I was getting ready behind our curtain when suddenly this little dark-haired pixie stuck her head inside and handed me a makeup case. It was so dark back there I didn't realize what it was until I opened it and saw a caseful of LIERAC skin beauty products from my favorite makeup artist Tina Turnbow (who does MU on celebrities like Christina Hendricks and who is a contributing writer for the likes of Marie Claire and Beauty Banter.

I've been using a product they have called Bust Lift - I figure preventive measures can't hurt, right? And now I'm incorporating more night and day items into my regiment. There were so many products in there that it took me a while to figure out what product to use and how. Very exciting!

Lierac - my latest beauty obsession

A couple of other show-related news:
  • Beatles Burlesque will be at Crash Mansion on Monday, December 12. Show starts at 10pm! Same $10 just in Manhattan this time. Michael and I went by the space to check out the stage and it is very nice. Hardwood floors, a big stage, no dressing room just a green room so we'll have to bring a mirror on our own. But the space definitely feels more intimate with low ceilings and banquet-style booths and small cabaret-style tables in the front. Plus they are in Manhattan right by Bowery Ballroom, near many subway stops. Hopefully that will entice the Manhattanites to are reluctant to go out on a Monday night to bring their bodies out to this awesome show!

    • I have a new show called "Tails & Feathers" starting Friday, November 19 at Toro Lounge which is the Smyth Thompson Hotel's downstairs lounge in TriBeCa! The show is free with complimentary drinks from 10-11pm and the show starts at 11pm. This inaugural show will feature some of my favorite performers who I am very familiar with, not only their personalities, the quality of work they bring, but also their oeuvre (haha, I felt like using that now). Gal Friday, Bird of Paradise, and I'm thrilled to bring Shelly Watson's goose-bump-enducing, move you to tears opera singing to this show! The event manager was very excited about having opera there as am I! I have a feeling this will become a monthly show or even bi-monthly. Fingers crossed that the Tribeca folks will like it!

      3.  Looks like Macao Trading Company will also be doing something special for their New Year's Eve dinner party as well. I will be announcing that shortly...as soon as I finish designing the flyer for that night! Last year I was at Chow Bar doing Dim Sum Burlesque's NYE dinner/show and went to Macao afterwards and danced on the top of their dining table as Bryan Helm documented here!
      NYE 2009

Tonight I am gogo dancing at Kings County Bar in Bushwick/East Williamsburg tonight with Deity, Belle a Go-Go and Stormy Leather. I'm so excited cause I put together 3 KILLER outfits to wear tonight. I LOVE gogo-ing nights sometimes you just wanna dance (not to sound totally like one of those "I'm a happy girl with my white iPod riding my bike and I LOVE the world and I LOVE my life!!!") but .... yeah I do love to dance and eat a big burger afterwards at 3am then finding money in your bra later.

Monday November 15 "Drunken Dragon Night" at Macao and Sapphire Jones will be performing! I'm very excited to have her there for the  first time. The open bar this Monday is provided by Wild  Turkey from 9-11pm. Show is at 11pm. Free admission.

Saturday November 20 is "Spreading the Curtains" at Coco de Mer and also The Naughty Housewife's birthday celebration so please RSVP because it's going to sell out again. I have a new act that I'm debuting that night and we have a very special group act as well. He he. The line-up is Peekaboo Pointe, Lil Steph from Philly who was showcased in this year's Ms. Exotic World. Please call the NY store at (212) 966-9069 to RSVP. Open bar provided by 42Below. $25cover. Show starts at 8pm.

      Beatles Burlesque April 12, 2010

My mind is all about the "Beatles Burlesque" show coming up in a couple of weeks! The band, Ticket to Ride, have been rehearsing and holy crap they sound so rock and so amazing. Honi came by yesterday to rehearse her song too. The gogo dancers are planning the costumes, the flyer is done, the web site done, the line up is settled, press has been contacted. It's all coming together so well.

I'm a happy camper for sho. Happy everyone is having a good time prepping and enthusiastic and if I can buy pizza to keep the boys fueled, I do. Matt had the idea of shooting the band picture in a Chinese take out restaurant being that this is a "Calamity Chang" production and all - I love it. It's kitschy and very much in the spirit of burlesque. The boys look yummy. I would want to sleep with them if I saw them play especially the one on the left. (I wrote that cause I know you are reading this, you know who you are!)

      TICKET TO RIDE!

I'm also very happy to report that Honi Harlow has asked me to be a regular at her monthly show "Harlow's Hideaway" at Fontana's on Eldridge Street! This is my first regular gig outside of my own shows and I'm fuckin thrilled!!! You have no idea how nice it feels sometimes to just go and do an act and enjoy a show, and not be the producer, the MC, the one that has to keep time and keep things together. Now the first Mondays of every month will be my un-manic Mondays! I also love this opportunity because Fontana's is walking distance so that saves me cab fare.

      Tonight & Sunday SuperBowl Shows

You know how sometimes if you drink too much coffee your stomach gets all tight and you feel like you have to take a poop (but you don't really)? That's how I feel right now sitting at work but thinking about tonight's show at Nurse Bettie and about Sunday's show with Runaround Sue's SugarShackBurlesque at Galapagos in DUMBO. I'm doing 2 acts in the pre-game party starting at 3 PM with the Peculiar Gentlemen. Kick-off is at 630 PM projection on the 50ft. screen! I'm NOT a sports fan but given the context of the art space, I can perhaps enjoy it ironically. IF there are chicken wings for me! I also decided that I want to do more metal/hair metal acts with Brassy and Michael (we still have yet to come up with a clever name for the 3 of us. Suggestions welcome!) so I've started working on Metallica's "Enter Sandman".

Speaking of Metallica, I remember going to the One concert when I lived in Texas. I was a junior in high school and as a part time job I was working with my girl friends in telemarketing (since we talked so much on the phone we thought it would be an easy job - we were wrong. haha.). There was this older guy working there and he was a total metal head with long hair. I thought he was cute cuz of the hair and he was older. HOT! He asked me to go see Metallica and I said yes. We smoked a joint on the lawn and made out like bandits then went back to his house and then things went waa waa waaa... He still lived at home with his parents! I was not going to have sex with an older guy who was still living home with his folks! Standards, people! After making out some more, I put on the brakes and said, "Drive me home." That was that. I never saw him again.

Anyway - so back to my AWESOME life here in NYC. More info on Sunday's pre-game show!
Don't have a TV? Love Chicken Wings & Sliders? Haven't watched Football all year but love to PARTY!?! Then come on down to Galapagos for a Pre-Game Party and watch the Superbowl with theater style projections.

      Sunday, February 7th
      DOORS: 3:00PM | SHOW: 3:30PM
      KICK-OFF: 6:30PM
      Tickets: $5.00
      Tickets Available at the door.

Sugar Shack Burlesque & Brooklyn's Peculiar Gentlemen will be hosting a Pre-Game get together with superstar DJ jenNYork from Bar 13, Apotheke, Mile High Crew at Piano's

Spend the afternoon with Galapagos for Football, Burlesque, Live Music & Beer Specials!

      Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me"

Last weekend at The Floating Kabarett at Galapagos (my favorite place to perform!), I brought back a number that I've been very fond of but have not had the opportunity to do often (stage size). I debuted it last June at Femme Appeal's Kitty Night's to a very positive reception. That was the only act Femme has ever seen me do and based on this act, she recommended me to another producer which led me to develop my Patsy Cline "Your Cheatin Heart" act. I absolutely love doing "Talk Dirty to Me" because it's so high energy and the choreography is very active. Unlike my fan dances which are languorous and melancholic, "Talk Dirty" is ALL ABOUT THE DANCING!

This time I invited Brassy to sing it live and Michael to play electric while I did my dance! The concept, very quickly, involves playing with the stereotype of Asians being really smart at school and general goodie-goodies. I come out dressed in a private school girl outfit (magenta sweater with letters, striped tie, plaid skirt, converse sneakers). In my hand I'm holding 5 composition books that have different messages on them. Since Galapagos has the huge screen that I can use, I made a slide projection of each message to match as I am showing them to the audience. They say, "Straight A Student", "Really Good at Math," "Perfect SAT Score" etc. etc. It's a riff on those chain emails that were popular a while back called, "99 Reasons You Know You Are Asian" and it includes things such as, "Your parents ask you why you didn't bring home a test score of 100 instead of 99" and "Your parents use the dishwasher to store dishes instead of washing dishes" - etc etc. I don't want to give away the whole act cause I want you to come see it, but basically the act is about rebelling against those things.

The act was made even stronger with live music. We all went to Beacon's Closet and found stuff to wear that tied us together visually. Michael had on a similar stripey tie that I wore and Brassy wore the same magenta color in her skirt and flower. We really rocked it out. The way Brassy sang it with all her usual sassy improved commentary and with Michael looking every bit like the rock star, I was INSPIRED. The knee pads helped too. Lucky for me, we get to do it again Monday night at House of Sugar's Monday Night Burlesque at Public Assembly! Come check us out! 10 PM.

      New Site Launch!

My new site has launched! http://www.CalamityChangNYC.com - now you can find out about the shows I'm producing and performing in and other juicy tidbits on my blog too. Big xoxo to photographer Michael Webb, stylist Rebecca Walsh, and the people at Double Crown & Madame Geneva for making this site so elegant and beautiful! I hope you love it as much as I do.

      Hello!

This blog is now dedicated to my show announcements, new act ideas, burlesque gossip, and whatever else that strikes a calamity fancy. Isn't the background photo sumptuous? That's taken by my boyfriend Michael Webb who has sole proprietory rights to photograph me. Just kiddin! But it is a sumptuous photo taken in the downstairs bathroom of Double Crown, one of my favorite restaurants, and also named the #1 Best Restroom to have Public Sex by Time Out in 2009.
